Wading Through The Confusion Of Children’s Nutrition

By admin | Mar 5, 2009

With all the mixed information and studies on the market today, it is often difficult for parents to decide what is best for their children when it concerns their nutrition.

Considering that we grew up with a different food pyramid than that of our children, it is no wonder so many parents are confused and have their children’s nutrition at the top of their list of things to discuss with their doctors. One day juice is okay the next it is bad, one doctor says one thing, while another in the same practice will tell you something completely different.

The important thing for parents to remember is that it is ultimately up to them to be in charge of what their children are eating and not eating. They are setting examples by their lifestyles and should eat as they would like their children to. If you do not want your children to fill up on junk food then do not have junk food in the house. For snacks have fruit, yogurt and raw vegetables. You can control what your children will eat while they are at home, and even at school by packing their lunches.

Do your homework, read the ingredients and plan ahead for your meals and snacks. It is not harmful for your children to have an occasional candy bar, or bag of chips, you will however not want it to be an everyday occurrence or a staple of their diet.

Other things to consider would be your children’s vitamin intake, and exercise.

Grow Your Kids Up Healthy

Good nutrition is essential to the good health and proper growth in children. A well balanced diet will help a child grow up strong and healthy , reaching their fill potential . The importance of balance can not be over emphasised. Plenty of fruit and vegetables for vitamins and minerals are important, but so are carbohydrates and protein.

Carbohydrates, in the form of rice, pasta, bread, etc. should be included in all three meals of the day and should form one third of the overall meal, with vegetables making up another third and lastly a third protein.

In the case of vegetarian children this should be a high grade protein, such as cheese, egg, fish, tofu, etc. It is much more difficult for vegan parents to include enough protein in their children’s diets. However, with careful management this is possible. The main problem is finding a protein source that will provide sufficient good quality protein inn a form that your child can not only digest but will also enjoy eating .

One of the problems in today’s society is obesity which is starting younger and younger these days, so a proper nutritious diet is important not only to ensure a good start in life but also to encourage good habits for life. But please do not forget the odd sweet treat is also a part of a balanced diet. After all, food should be about enjoyment, not just fueling the body. Also small children are sometimes fed such a ‘healthy’ diet they do not consume enough calories.

Why Kids Need Proper Nutrition

Nutritional intake is essential throughout all stages of life, but it is critical during the period of childhood, when the body is growing at a staggering rate. It can be difficult to ensure that a child is getting the appropriate nutritional intake, especially when many children are picky eaters. Some nutritious foods that even finicky eaters typically enjoy are apples, peanut butter, milk, yogurt and tuna. Practicing healthy eating habits early in a child’s life not only ensures that they will grow to their full potential, but also reinforces positive eating habits that can last a lifetime.
